Fall Fishing in the Hamptons: Essential 2026 Guide

 September 30, 2026

Fall fishing in the Hamptons gives boaters plenty of reasons to keep the rods aboard after Labor Day. Striped bass move south along the coast, bluefish chase bait, and false albacore add another target around the East End. As October arrives, blackfish season brings more opportunities around rocky bottom and structure.

For the 2026 season, a good plan starts with where you want to fish, what you want to catch, and the conditions that day. From Shinnecock and Moriches to the Peconics and Montauk, here is what to keep in mind before leaving the dock.

What to Catch During Fall Fishing in the Hamptons

Striped Bass

Striped bass are a major part of the Long Island fall run. Their southward migration brings opportunities along ocean beaches, around inlets, and through the rips off Montauk. Baitfish activity helps narrow the search, but fish do not need to be breaking the surface to be feeding.

Bluefish and False Albacore

Bluefish and false albacore can join the fall action around concentrations of bait. Montauk is particularly well known for these mixed feeding opportunities. Watch what the fish are feeding on, keep a casting setup ready, and give nearby anglers room to work. Avoid running through a school to reach the action.

Black Sea Bass and Blackfish

For anglers who prefer bottom fishing, black sea bass and blackfish offer another way to spend a fall day. Both associate with structure, including rocks, wrecks, and reefs. Blackfish feed on crabs and other hard-shelled prey, while cooling water can shift both species toward deeper areas as the season progresses.

Check the blackfish opening date for the water you will actually fish. Long Island Sound and the New York Bight follow different fall schedules.

Where to Plan an East End Fishing Trip

Shinnecock Bay and Shinnecock Inlet

For Hampton Bays and Southampton boaters, Shinnecock puts bay fishing and ocean access in the same area. The inlet and nearby beachfront are established places to look for fall striped bass. Build your trip around current conditions, and assess the inlet before committing to an ocean run.

Moriches Bay and the Westhampton Area

Moriches gives Westhampton-area anglers another South Shore option. Bay channels, inlet approaches, and nearby ocean water provide different places to look for bait and feeding fish. Keep the route within your local knowledge and your boat’s capabilities, especially when navigating unfamiliar channels.

Peconic Bay and the North Fork

The Peconic Bay system offers a different setting between the North and South Forks. Plan around the species you are targeting and recent local reports instead of expecting every summer spot to keep producing. Choose your fishing area with the wind direction in mind; a bay trip still needs a careful forecast check.

Montauk and the Surrounding Waters

Montauk’s fall reputation comes from migrating fish meeting concentrated bait around the Point. Striped bass, bluefish, and false albacore can all be part of the mix. Conditions and fish movement determine the day, so keep your expectations flexible and leave plenty of room around working boats.

2026 New York Fall Fishing Regulations

These selected New York recreational rules apply to private-boat anglers and were checked September 30, 2026. Review the current NYSDEC saltwater fishing regulations before each trip.

Species or regionOpen season relevant to fallSize limitDaily limit per angler
Striped bass, marine watersApril 15 to December 1528 to 31 inch slot1
BluefishYear-roundNo minimum5
Black sea bass, fall periodSeptember 1 to December 3116 inch minimum6
Blackfish, Long Island SoundOctober 11 to December 916 inch minimum3
Blackfish, New York BightOctober 15 to December 2216 inch minimum4

Blackfish rules depend on the fishing location, not the departure marina. Consult DEC’s regional definitions. Different rules may apply in federal waters, neighboring states, or aboard licensed party and charter boats.

Anglers age 16 and older generally need enrollment in New York’s Recreational Marine Fishing Registry, with certain exemptions. When using natural bait for striped bass, use non-offset inline circle hooks; DEC provides an exemption for artificial lures, including those tipped with bait.

Keep release tools ready, minimize time out of the water, and support fish horizontally when handling them. DEC’s saltwater fishing best practices explain how to reduce handling stress.

Getting Your Boat Ready for Fall Fishing

Planning fall fishing in the Hamptons means leaving room for changing weather and shorter days. Check the National Weather Service marine forecast for your full route, including the return trip. Strong currents and shallow water can make inlet conditions different from the surrounding forecast area.

Before heading out, check navigation lights, batteries, bilge pumps, fuel, and your VHF radio. Wear a properly fitted life jacket, bring warm layers, and tell someone your route and expected return time. Give yourself enough daylight to return comfortably.

Fall Fishing in the Hamptons FAQ

Is October a good time to fish on the East End?

October offers a mix of migrating striped bass, bluefish, and bottom-fishing opportunities. Blackfish season also opens during the month. The right trip depends on the target species, current reports, and weather.

Do you have to go to Montauk for fall fishing?

No. Shinnecock, Moriches, and the Peconic Bay system provide other East End options. Choose a location that fits your target species, experience, and the day’s conditions.

Can you keep fishing before winterizing your boat?

Yes, provided your boat remains properly maintained and conditions allow. Coordinate your final trips with your service appointment so the boat’s engines and water systems receive winter protection before freezing weather.
